Frequently asked questions
Find answers to the most common questions about The Lewis Foundation, including how our gift packs work, how you can support the charity and how patients receive help during cancer treatment. If you cannot find the information you need, our team will always be happy to help.
Are all the gift packs free?
Yes. All Lewis Foundation gift packs are completely free for patients diagnosed with cancer in the hospital setting. Our aim is to bring comfort and kindness to people during a difficult time, so patients never have to pay for the support we provide. The gift packs are funded through donations, fundraising events and the generosity of our supporters.
How are the gift packs free?
The gift packs are made possible thanks to donations from individuals, businesses, and community supporters. Profits from the Community Cafés, Outlet Store and Community Centre help fund the cost of every pack. Fundraising events, corporate partnerships and charity supporters allow us to prepare and deliver thousands of gift packs to hospitals every month. Every contribution helps us continue supporting people diagnosed with cancer.Â
Do I have to sign up?
No sign up is required. Packs are only available within the hospital setting. Patients receiving cancer treatment can access gift packs through participating hospitals where Lewis Foundation volunteers and hospital teams make them available on oncology wards.
Â
Are you funded?
We do not receive funding. Our services are funded by income from our Community Cafés, Outlet Store and Community Centre, plus donations of money and products, fundraising, and donations from the public.
Can anyone be a volunteer?
Yes. We welcome volunteers from many different backgrounds who want to support the charity and help make a difference. Volunteers support the charity in many ways including preparing gift packs, helping with fundraising events and assisting with community activities. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact us through the website to learn more.
Do you take second-hand donations?
No — for hygiene and safety reasons we can only accept brand-new items. If you’d like to donate, please contact our team and we’ll advise what’s most helpful.
Do you get help from the government?
The Lewis Foundation is primarily supported by donations, fundraising and community support. While we work closely with hospitals and healthcare teams, the charity itself is funded through the generosity of individuals, businesses and supporters who believe in our mission.
Is the gift only for specific cancer?
No — the gift is available for any adult diagnosed with cancer in the hospital setting, from newly diagnosed to end-of-life care.
How do I access the gift packs in the hospital setting?
Each hospital is set up differently. Some have gift stations by the reception desk, others do a trolley round, and some hand packs out on admission. If you don’t see the packs, don’t be afraid to ask — they’re there for you to access for free. Even if you’re in hospital every week or are a long-term patient, you can take more than one pack to help you during your stay.
Do you give gifts to children?
We give gifts to adults diagnosed with cancer. There are other wonderful charities dedicated to supporting children with cancer and we encourage hospitals to connect families with those organisations when appropriate.
I can't get through on the phones or email?
The charity receives a large number of enquiries and our team works hard to respond to everyone as quickly as possible. If you have not received a response yet, please allow a little time and we will reply as soon as we can. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated.
